Lewis Nkosi was the first black South African to receive the Nieman Fellowship from Harvard University, but due to his style of writing, he was effectively an opponent of the apartheid regime. He was a granted an exit permit and he spent the next 30 years in exile. He worked for the BBC and NET during his years abroad and only returned to South Africa in 2001. Sadly, he died in 2010 from injuries sustained from a car accident.
